The
Holy Grail of Cebreiro, symbol of Co. Ancares Cebreiro
is the capital of Co. Ancares, on the eastern Highlands of Galicia. This
highland village boasts one of the most important shrines in Galicia and
in the whole pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The area has been
linked to Arthurian traditions and a medieval legend dating from the Middle
Ages tells that the wine contained in the Cebreiro Chalice turned once into
the real blood of Christ. Since then, the Shrine in Cebreiro became one
of Galicia's most famous places. The arms of Cebreiro were oficially approved by Galician Government Decree 274/1998, on September 24th 1998, as "Vert the Chalice and paten Or, between two scallops Argent, chief indented Or". The Arms of Cebreiro represent the best known symbols of Co. Ancares, in the northern Highlands of Galicia: - The field of the flag, in green, with the golden indented chief, represent the Highland landscape of Ancares. - The Holy Grail of Cebreiro, which allegedly contained the blood of Christ according to a medieval tradition. - The scallop shells, symbol of St James as Galicia's Patron Saint, point to the close connection of the Cebreiro shrine with the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. |
